Shaftesbury Carnival is an annual event that takes place in late September or early October every year in the town. It has become part of Shaftesbury’s history after the first one took place in 1877. When the carnival was first founded its main aim was to raise funds for the hospital, however when the NHS was introduced, other local charities were also supported.
Most of the activities of Shaftesbury Carnival take place in the week leading up to the main carnival day, although there are numerous fundraising events that take place throughout the year.
