Located in heart of the village of Abbotsbury are the remains of Abbotsbury Abbey, an 11th century abbey now under the care of English Heritage.
Originally built as a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Peter, the abbey once controlled eight manor houses. However, as with nearly all of Britain's other monasteries misfortune struck in the Middle Ages following Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Abandoned, the abbey fell into ruins as its stone were reused by villagers. Fortunately the Great Barn and St Catherine's Chapel were spared, both of which are now Grade I listed buildings.
